Asbestos

Asbestos fibers are very thin almost 50 to 200 times thinner than a human hair. Thus they can be invisible to the naked eye. They can float in the air for a long time and can be breathed into the lungs. Asbestos fibers can split down, reducing in size until they are small enough to travel deep into the body where they pierce the lining of the lungs. The body’s immune system does not have an effective mechanism for removing materials from this deep within the lungs. And as the asbestos fibers are embedded in the lining, they will remain in the body for the rest of a person's life.

So what happens if asbestos stays in the lungs? The actual damage happens when the asbestos fibers reach the alveoli - the tiny air sacs at the end of your breathing passages, deep in your lungs. Normally your alveoli inflate and deflate like a balloon, taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide. Healthy alveoli are nice and stretchy. Once asbestos lodges itself here, it can cause major damage and scarring also called fibrosis which makes your alveoli become stiff, not stretchy. When your alveoli are stiff your lungs have a harder time taking in oxygen, and the muscles in your chest have to work harder to force the air in and out of your lungs.

There are particular risks involved when children are exposed to asbestos dust. Adults especially in those who have smoked are also at a higher risk for the four major asbestos related diseases like:

  • Pleural plaques
  • Asbestosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma

Whether an individual develops an asbestos-related disease depends on a range of exposure factors such as the level and duration of exposure, length of time since first exposure, the fiber type, and concurrent exposure to tobacco smoke and other carcinogens.

As prevention is better than cure; the only sensible thing to do is to avoid inhaling asbestos dust!
